Finnish Horse Board - Class I premium
in young pony assessment

Bred by Ms Tuula Pyöriä at Caragh Connemara Ponies in Finland, this young colt is the only son of internationally-renowned stallion Innellan Kestrel in North America. Henkka is also from a classic Irish mare line and full of promise...

Henkka's Achievements

  • Score of 84.5% in Canadian Connemara Pony Society stallion inspection
  • Point score: 98887=40 and I premium from Finland's Hippos Young Pony Assessment, 2009
  • Results from the Finnish Connemara Pony Society Breed Show (Sept 5 2009) - judge Tom MacLochlainn from Ireland:
    - Reserve Supreme Champion of Show
    - Junior Champion
    - Class Winner Yearling colts and geldings
    - Downhill Cup: award to the best pony bred in Finland

Henkka's results at the Finnish breed show are particularly impressive considering his age, the judge and the high standards all horse breeders are held to by the Finnish Horse Board (Finland's Hippos). It is unusual for a young colt to beat out mature breeding stock in contention for the supreme championship of a show.

June 2012

Henkka is a proven sire and a colt from his first crop has been sold as a stallion prosepect to central British Columbia on the west coast of Canada.

January 2009

We look forward to showing Henkka in Canada in the future.

Pedigree Notes

Henkka's sire Innellan Kestrel was bred in the UK by Mr. John Beeley and then sold to Ireland. In 2000 he was purchased by Stutteri Bech in Denmark. He stood the 2003, 2006 and 2007 breeding seasons in Finland at Caragh Stud and is currently back in Denmark. Some of his show results are as follows:

  • 1997 CPBS Show Clifden Ireland: 1st, yearling colts.
  • 1999 CPBS Show Clifden Ireland: 1st, 3 & 4 years old stallions.
  • 2000 CPBS Show Clifden Ireland: 3rd, 4 years and older stallions.
  • 2003 approved for breeding with the highest score ever in Finland.
  • 2003 Finnish Connemara Pony Society Breed Show: Supreme Champion.
  • 2007 Finnish National Pony Show: Champion Stallion, Champion Connemara and 3rd Best In Show (all breeds).
  • 2008 Danish Connemara Show: 1st, 5 years and older stallions.
  • 2008 Denmark Best in Show.

Innellan Kestrel

Kestrel's success as a sire includes:

Innellan Kestrel
  • Champion foals at Clifden 2001, Denmark 2003, Finland 2004 and best colt foal Denmark 2005.
  • Daughters Doohill Lass and Nire Valley Kestrel placed 1st-2nd at Clifden 2004 in the 3yo mare class.
  • In 2005 ten yearlings by Kestrel were shown in Finland. Nine of those got I class premium at the National Pony Show, Breed Show or Finland’s Hippos youngstock inspections.
  • Highest marks ever in Denmark for a Connemara progeny group (six daughters between 2 and 6) at the 2008 Danish Connemara Pony Society Inspection. In 2008 at the Danish Show he also sired the Reserve Champion of the show as well as another class winner.
  • Performance ponies The Connaught Ghost eventing in the UK; Murvey Dunhill driving in the UK (BCPS Performance Scheme Award for driving 2006); Loughfadda Best Man (2009 HOYS Ridden M&M finalist); John's Cuckoo (6th in HOYS 2009 Ridden M&M Pony of the Year Olympia 2009) and Clogher Valley Kestrel (winner of Irish Long Distrance Riding Awards). A list of Kestrel's progeny in Denmark is available here. More information about Kestrel here.
  • Approved stallion sons: Kinley S in Germany; Hojbjergs Bright Star (DEN) in Ireland; Crusheen Comet in Ireland; Glendine Kestrel in Ireland; Springfield Shadow in Germany and Cleos Antonius in Finland.

Spinway Comet
Kestrel's sire, Henkka's paternal grandsire, Spinway Comet needs little introduction. He is one of only 17 BCPS Super Premium stallions and was Supreme Connemara at Ponies of Britain five times. He is the sire of successful stallions Churchway Daybreak, Spinway Blackthorn, Spinway Kestrel, Oaklands Alsvid and Lonsdale Legend (bred in NZ, exported to IRE). Through Comet and his get the Mountian Lad, or green line, is being kept very much alive (read more here).
Kestrel's dam, Henkka's paternal graddam, Abbeyleix Swan represents a classic Irish-bred family at its best - through her dam Fionnuala she was a half sister to stallions Abbeyleix Fionn, five times Clifden winner, and Boden Park Finnard, sire of many perfomance ponies (both by Ashfield Sparrow). Swan bred nine foals for Innellan Stud, including two who are now broodmares in France and several geldings competing in the UK in dressage and WHP. Her grandfoals include the stallions Innellan Thunderbird (FR) (Thunderbolt x Innellan Lark) and Innellan Phoenix (UK) (Innellan Odette x Liscaninane Boy) and the winning show pony mare Innellan Sandpiper (Spinway Comet x Innellan Flamingo).

Henkka's dam Innellan Gem was was bred in the UK by Mr. John Beeley and imported to Finland in 2005 as a yearling.

She was shown once for a 3rd place finish in the 2007 mare class at the Finnish National Pony Show. Gem was a Class I mare with a II premium; in order to gain a I premium, she was scheduled to take a ridden test in the summer of 2010. Sadly, Gem died very suddenly and unexpectedly in February 2010 shortly before Henkka was exported to Canada. The loss of such a young mare who left only 2 foals is tragic and our condolences go out to Tuula.

Innellan Gem

Gem's sire, Henkka's maternal grandsire, is Glencarrig Lexus, owned by Ann O'Brien Conroy, Ben Baun Ponies, Ballyconneely, Ireland. Lexus was the Champion of the 2007 Roundstone Connemara Pony Show and 2nd in the stallion class at Clifden in 2005. Lexus is a true Irish blueblod: his sire, Village Boy, was reserve Supreme Champion at Clifden in 1996, while his dam, Coosheen Breeze won the 3 year old mare class in 1995, and the 8/9 year old mare class in 2001. The young stallion Bunowen Bobby, winner of the yearling colt class 2004 at Clifden, is by Lexus.

Gem's dam, Henkka's maternal granddam, Ashfield Rolling Stone is a direct decendant of the great mare Cuach na Coille, multiple winner of the CPBS Archbishop's Cup for best broodmare in the 1940s, through the mare Jump The Wall. This mare family has produced stallions such as Ormond Oliver, Ballintemple Dun Rambler and Glencarrig Bobby as well as contributing good broodmares to studs in the US, France, Sweden, UK and Ireland.
